RuID: application errors and how to fix them
A RuID application is an foreign national’s profile and application to enter Russia : passport details, travel dates and purpose, and address of stay. Errors here are the most common reason an application fails verification or questions arise at the border. The good news: almost all errors are immediately visible and can be fixed by resubmitting the data — without intermediaries and without panic.
There is one rule: every letter and digit must match the document. Even a one-letter discrepancy in transliteration results in a “data mismatch” during verification. The general registration procedure is described in the RuID guide ; here, we focus only on errors and how to fix them.
In brief: what to do
- Open your RuID profile and compare your full name with your passport — letter for letter, using the same transliteration as in the document.
- Check the passport series, number, and expiration date. If you have replaced your passport, enter the details of the new document.
- Compare your travel dates with your tickets, and your address of stay with your booking or invitation.
- Have you already submitted an application with an error? Cancel it and submit a new one before your trip — step-by-step instructions .
- Keep access to your phone and email: confirmation codes are sent there, and receiving SMS messages from abroad requires roaming.
- Nothing helped — message @visitrfbot : the bot responds instantly, while a live operator @visitrf responds within a day.
Where errors occur and how to fix them
| Field | How the error appears | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | “Data mismatch” during verification or at the border | Write it exactly as in your passport or visa: the same transliteration, letters, and order |
| Passport series and number | The application fails verification | Compare it with the passport’s first page; if you have replaced the document, enter the new number |
| Passport expiration date | The application is rejected | Check that the document is valid for all travel dates |
| Citizenship and date of birth | Mismatch during verification | Select them exactly from the list, as in the document, without “filling in the gaps” |
| Travel dates | Discrepancy with tickets, questions at the border | Bring the dates into line with the actual itinerary |
| Purpose of travel | Questions from border officers | State it honestly and in accordance with the documents: a discrepancy between the application and the actual purpose is a common reason for additional checks |
| Address of stay | Problems with migration registration later | Specify the actual address where you will be staying |
Do not try to “adjust” the data to a convenient option: the passport is the standard, not the other way around.
You changed your passport: how to update your details
A common situation: the application was completed using an old passport, and then the document was replaced. Proceed as follows:
- Enter the details of the new passport in your RuID profile.
- Check whether an application submitted using the old details remains.
- If there is one — cancel it and submit a new one with the new number.
During checks, officials may sometimes search using the old document number as well: if the service “cannot find” you, check the record using your previous passport details too.
The application has already been submitted with an error
Do not delay: cancel the application and submit a new one before your trip. The procedure is described in the instructions for canceling a RuID application . Save the confirmation of the new application — a PDF or screenshot may be useful at the border.
There is no need to correct the submitted application “from within” — it is easier to replace it entirely. And do not entrust the correction to intermediaries: “I’ll do RuID for you” is a typical scheme for stealing passport details and SMS codes.
Confirmation codes and login: when the application is not the issue
Sometimes the problem is not with the data, but with account access:
- The SMS code does not arrive abroad. A Russian SIM card without roaming cannot receive SMS messages. Enable roaming in advance or add a backup email — codes are duplicated there.
- The login code has been lost. Use access recovery in the app and official Gosuslugi support. Do not recover the code through third parties.
- The app reports that a VPN is running. Disable the VPN and proxy and try logging in again — this is the most common cause of this error.
- The app cannot be installed or does not work correctly. Install RuID only from RuStore, Google Play, or the App Store: third-party APKs carry a phishing risk.
If the data is correct but the application still fails verification, RuID registration step by step will help rule out errors with the login and profile themselves.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to complete a RuID application if I have a residence permit?
The list of people who do not need to submit an application to enter Russia is maintained on Gosuslugi . For example, citizens of Belarus, foreign nationals entering with a visa, and children under 14 do not submit their own applications — a parent includes them in their application. Check your category in the official FAQ; a RuID account is useful for digital services in any case.
Can I complete the application through the website rather than the app?
For some categories — yes: the Gosuslugi website and the RuID app use the same profile. Check the submission rules for your category in the Gosuslugi FAQ .
What should I do if a QR code does not appear after submitting the application?
Check the application status in the app: confirmation is generated after the application is submitted. If the status is “submitted” but there is no confirmation, wait for processing and check the applications section again. Save a screenshot of the status: it may be useful if you need to contact support.
Can I correct one error without canceling the application?
It is more reliable to cancel the application and submit a new one — this ensures that all the data goes through verification. The procedure is described in the cancellation instructions .
What should I do if the error appears at the border?
Calmly show your passport, application confirmation, and tickets. A data discrepancy is grounds for an additional check, but it is not a “verdict”: use your documents to confirm that the error is technical. The general rules for entering Russia are described separately.
Who should I contact if the corrections do not help?
Message @visitrfbot — the bot immediately handles common application errors. For complex cases, contact a live operator @visitrf and the support contacts .
Where can I check whether entry is prohibited if I are unsure about the data?
Entry ban check is a separate free tool on the website.
