RuID is not needed “just for formality”. It helps a foreigner prepare digital steps before travelling to Russia: create a profile, submit an entry application where the rules require it, and use services for foreigners. Problems usually appear not at the moment of registration, but later: the code does not arrive, passport data was entered with a mistake, a child cannot be added, or the app does not open before departure.

Creating a RuID account with phone and documents

What RuID is

RuID is a digital profile and app/service for foreigners connected with Gosuslugi services. It may provide actions related to entry into Russia and services for foreign citizens. The available functions depend on current rules, citizenship, status and the purpose of travel.

Important: RuID does not replace your passport, migration card, visa, temporary residence permit, residence permit, migration registration or work patent. It is a separate digital step that must be checked against your real legal status.

Who should register in advance

Registration and a check of available actions are useful for people who:

  • plan to enter Russia under a visa-free regime;
  • need to submit an entry application if the rules require it;
  • travel with a child and must prepare the child’s data in advance;
  • plan to apply for migration services after arrival;
  • want to avoid discovering that the app does not work right before the border.

Step-by-step registration

  1. Open the official RuID service or the app connected with Gosuslugi.
  2. Choose registration for a foreign citizen.
  3. Enter your full name exactly as in the passport, date of birth, citizenship and document details.
  4. Add a phone number and email that you can access before travel and at the border.
  5. Confirm the contact details with a code if the service requests it.
  6. Check the profile: name, passport number, date of birth and citizenship must match the document.
  7. If the service offers an entry application, fill in the purpose of travel, dates, entry point and address of stay.
  8. Save the application number, confirmation and screenshots of the status.

Before submitting an application, check every letter and digit. A mistake in the passport number or date of birth can lead to refusal, delay or the need to submit the application again.

A citizen of Kazakhstan plans to enter Russia to meet an employer. He creates a RuID profile in advance, but enters the number of an old passport in the application. The correct action is not to wait until the departure day: he should immediately check whether correction is possible, save the number of the wrong application, submit correct data through the official service and separately prepare documents for migration registration and a work patent if the purpose of travel is work.

Frequently asked questions

Is RuID mandatory for all foreigners?

No. It depends on the purpose of entry, citizenship and status. Some foreigners are covered by exceptions; check the official FAQ and the rules for your scenario.

Does RuID replace a visa or VNZh?

No. A visa, RVP, VNZh, work patent and migration registration remain separate documents and procedures.

Can I register right before the trip?

It is better to do it in advance. If there is an error with data or a confirmation code, there may be no time to fix it on the day of departure.

What if a child travels with a parent?

Check the child’s age, document, legal representative data and the rules for submitting information for a minor. Do not postpone this step until the border.

What should I do after entry?

Receive the migration card, complete migration registration , and if needed prepare DMS and a work patent. RuID does not cancel these actions.
