RuID mistakenly detects VPN: what to do

If RuID reports that a VPN is enabled when you are not using one, first document the error and check your connection. Do not delete your profile, create multiple accounts, or install the app from a random file: this may introduce new problems and complicate contacting support.

The VPN message does not always allow you to determine the exact cause of the failure. Connection issues may be influenced by phone settings, proxies, private DNS, corporate or public networks, as well as the technical verification of the service itself. Below is a sequence of actions that helps separate network issues from login errors in Gosuslugi or RuID.

A traveler checks their phone connection before a trip

What to do first

  1. Take a screenshot of the entire message.
  2. Note the date, time, country of location, and type of network: Wi-Fi or mobile internet.
  3. Check if VPN, proxy, or secure DNS is enabled.
  4. Close RuID and reopen the app.
  5. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile network or vice versa.
  6. Check the login to Gosuslugi separately from RuID.
  7. If the error persists, prepare data for support.

Change one parameter at a time and repeat the login after each step. If you simultaneously delete the app, change the network, reset the password, and create a new profile, it will be difficult to understand where the problem arose.

Why RuID may show VPN

The app does not explain all the details of the network check to the user. Therefore, based on a single message, it cannot be confidently asserted that the service has indeed detected a VPN.

Check for possible intermediaries between the phone and the internet:

  • VPN app or built-in VPN profile;
  • proxy settings in Wi-Fi;
  • private DNS or traffic filtering app;
  • work or school profile with a secure connection;
  • public Wi-Fi in an airport, hotel, or university;
  • roaming, where internet traffic may go through the network of an operator from another country.

Do not disable corporate security measures if the phone belongs to your employer or educational institution. In this case, it is safer to use a personal device or agree on changing settings with the administrator.

How to check the network on Android

The names of the items depend on the phone manufacturer and Android version.

  1. Open network settings and find the VPN section.
  2. Disable the active connection and check if there is a persistent VPN profile.
  3. Open the settings of the current Wi-Fi network and check the proxy field: it should usually be set to “None” unless you have specifically configured it.
  4. Find the private DNS setting. If a third-party address is specified, temporarily select automatic mode and repeat the check.
  5. Disable apps that filter ads or redirect traffic through a local VPN.
  6. Switch to mobile internet and reopen RuID.

After checking, revert the necessary security settings. Do not leave the phone unprotected just for repeated login attempts.

How to check the network on iPhone

  1. Open VPN settings and ensure that the connection is disabled.
  2. Check the VPN and device management section: there may be an organizational profile there.
  3. Open the settings of the used Wi-Fi network and check the proxy setting.
  4. If a feature is enabled that hides the IP address or routes traffic through an additional secure channel, temporarily disable it for testing.
  5. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile internet.
  6. Completely close RuID and launch it again.

If the device is managed by an organization, do not delete the profile yourself. Check the login from a personal phone or contact the administrator.

If the error occurs only on one network

When RuID opens through mobile internet but shows VPN on Wi-Fi, the problem is likely related to that network or its settings. Do not change the RuID profile: use the working connection and save the test results.

If the error appears on both Wi-Fi and mobile networks:

  • enable automatic date, time, and time zone;
  • restart the phone;
  • update RuID from the official app store;
  • check for operating system updates;
  • ensure that there is enough free memory on the device;
  • try again later and document the new error time.

Do not download modified versions of RuID and installation files from chats. They may request Gosuslugi data, documents, or confirmation codes.

Check Gosuslugi separately

Sometimes the message appears at the stage of logging into Gosuslugi, not when filling out the application. Open Gosuslugi separately and check if you can log in with the same credentials.

If the login does not work there either, first restore access to your account. Check your username, password, confirmation method, and access to your phone number. Do not share your password, SMS codes, and recovery codes with anyone offering to “activate RuID” for money.

If Gosuslugi opens but RuID continues to show VPN, include this result in your inquiry. A detailed registration procedure is described in the guide how to register and apply in RuID .

What not to do

  • Do not create a new account after each error.
  • Do not delete the profile until you have saved the application number and screenshots.
  • Do not clear the app data if there is an important draft left in it.
  • Do not use someone else’s phone number for temporary login.
  • Do not enable a random free VPN to bypass the VPN message.
  • Do not consider the disappearance of the error as confirmation of application submission.

After logging in, check the application status separately. If it is not submitted, use the guide RuID: application for entry not submitted . If the problem is related to the code or SIM card, refer to the guide RuID without a Russian number .

What to send to support

Your inquiry will be more useful if it contains specific data but no passwords or codes.

Specify:

  • the country and city where the error occurred;
  • the phone model and operating system version;
  • the version of RuID;
  • the date and exact time of the attempt;
  • the type of connection;
  • whether the error occurs on another network;
  • whether a separate login to Gosuslugi works;
  • the application number if it has already been created;
  • a screenshot without unnecessary personal data.

Example message:

RuID reports that a VPN is enabled, although there is no active VPN connection. The error occurred on July 30 at 18:20 local time. Phone: ____. System and RuID version: ____. Country: ____. Checked mobile internet and Wi-Fi: result ____. Login to Gosuslugi separately works / does not work. Please check the cause of the error and suggest a safe way to continue with the current profile.

If there is little time before the trip

Participation in the RuID experiment is voluntary. The absence of an application alone is not a reason for refusal of entry. The decision to allow entry is made according to general rules and taking into account documents and other independent grounds; having an application does not guarantee entry either.

If you want to use RuID, check if the experiment applies to your situation. A complete explanation is available in the material who and when must register travel .

For regular submissions, the deadline is no later than 72 hours before entry. If the application has already been submitted, compare the actual submission time with the travel date and check if its status has been preserved. If a new submission is needed due to an error, focus on the time of the new application. The emergency procedure no later than 4 hours applies only in cases with a documented reason.

Do not cancel your trip just because of a RuID failure. Keep evidence of the error, contact support, and separately check your passport, visa, entry ban, and other requirements for your situation. If the date has changed, use the guide what to do when changing the entry date in RuID .

How to understand that the problem is resolved

The error disappearing is only the first step. Before the trip, check:

  • the login was performed in the correct profile;
  • passport details match the document;
  • the application is not left as a draft;
  • the correct route and date are specified;
  • the application status is displayed in the app;
  • the application number and confirmation are saved offline.

If there is no QR code after logging in, do not automatically return to network settings: it may be a different scenario. Check the guide why RuID does not show QR code .

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enable another VPN for RuID to work?

It is not advisable. A new VPN changes the connection route and may complicate diagnostics. It is safer to disable intermediaries, check two regular networks, and contact support.

The error only appears abroad. Is this normal?

A single message cannot determine the cause. Document the country, operator, network type, and the result of the check through another connection. Provide this data to support.

Do I need to delete and reinstall RuID?

First, update the app and check the network. Reinstalling may delete the local draft or require re-logging, so save the application number, status, and screenshots before doing so.

The VPN is disabled, but the warning remains. What next?

Check the proxy, private DNS, work profile, another network, automatic date and time, and then a separate login to Gosuslugi. If the result has not changed, send the collected technical data to support.
